Mass Rapid Transit or MRT Singapore is a rapidtransit system that forms the backbone of therailway system in Singapore and runs throughthis city state. The first part of the MRT, betweenYio Chu Kang Station and Toa Payoh Station,opened in 1987 and became the second oldestrapid transit system in Southeast Asia, afterManila's LRT System. This network has grownrapidly as a result of Singapore's goal to developa comprehensive rail network as the mainbackbone of the public transport system inSingapore with passengers travel daily average of 1.952 million people in 2009, nearly 63% from3.085 million passengers in the bus network the same. [2]
MRT has 79 stations (one of which is not in operation) [1] with the path along 129.7kilometers and operate on standard gauge. Rail line was built by the Land Transport Authority, anentity owned by the Singapore Governmentwhich gave concessions to the company'soperating profit of SMRT Corporation and SBSTransit. These operators also manages bus andtaxi services, thus ensuring the full integration of public transport services. MRT is complementedby a system of Light Rail Transit (LRT) that connects the regional MRT stations with HDBpublic housing. [3] This service operates from5:30 am and end before 1:00 am each day with a frequency of three to eight minutes, and the service is extended during holidays in Singapore. [4]
